What does AHT Cooling Systems E38 mean?
The controller reports that the control temperature has exceeded its permitted upper alarm threshold. This is distinct from E35 (goods room temperature too high) — E38 monitors a specific control reference point used by the regulation loop. When the control temperature rises above its maximum permitted value, E38 triggers to alert staff to a loss of cooling performance before goods are critically damaged.
Symptoms
- E38 fault code displayed with red LED and buzzer active.
- Control temperature reading above the configured high-temperature alarm threshold.
- Cabinet may be running but unable to achieve adequate cooling.
- Goods inside may be at elevated temperatures — product spoilage risk increases with time.
- Compressor may be running continuously without reducing the control temperature.
Common causes
- Condenser coils dirty or blocked, severely reducing heat rejection and causing high return temperatures.
- Compressor not running due to a safety trip (check for co-existing fault codes).
- Refrigerant loss reducing cooling capacity — compressor runs but cannot lower temperatures.
- Excessive store ambient temperature limiting condenser performance beyond the cabinet's rated ambient class.
- Night blind or air curtain fault allowing excessive warm air infiltration into the goods space.
- Control sensor failed or mislocated, producing a falsely high reading.
Diagnostic steps

Protect goods immediately
Transfer temperature-sensitive goods to another correctly rated cabinet before product temperatures reach unsafe levels.

Check for co-existing fault codes
Review the display for other active fault codes (e.g. compressor safety chain E07, high-pressure E06, or high condensation pressure E43) that would explain why the cabinet cannot cool.

Inspect condenser coils and ventilation
Check condenser coils and air intake/exhaust grilles for dust and blockage. Clean the condenser per the AHT cleaning procedure if fouled. Ensure at least 60 mm clearance above the cabinet for warm air exhaust.

Verify store ambient temperature
Confirm the store temperature is within the rated ambient class for the device. High store temperatures — especially during summer — can push the cabinet beyond its rated performance envelope.

Check control sensor
Inspect the control temperature sensor for correct mounting and wiring. Test sensor resistance with a multimeter at ambient temperature and compare to the NTC reference curve to confirm or rule out a sensor fault.
