Daikin A1 Error Code

Indoor unit PCB malfunction

What does Daikin A1 mean?

The A1 code signals that the indoor unit printed circuit board cannot complete its internal self-check. The onboard microcomputer has detected abnormal operation of its own circuitry, a corrupted EEPROM read, or electrical noise on the control bus. The unit shuts down to protect downstream components. Power-cycle first, then treat the indoor PCB itself as the prime suspect.

Symptoms

  • Unit stops mid-cycle and displays A1 on the wired controller or via LED flash
  • Indoor fan, swing flap, and drain pump will not respond to commands
  • Error returns immediately after a power reset
  • No response from infrared remote even with fresh batteries
  • Multiple zones on a shared bus may show communication loss

Common causes

  • Defective indoor unit PCB (microcomputer or EEPROM failure)
  • External electrical noise on the power supply corrupting PCB operation
  • Voltage irregularities or a recent surge event
  • Loose or damaged connectors on the indoor PCB
  • Firmware lock-up requiring a full power reset

Diagnostic steps

  1. Cycle power at the breaker

Switch the indoor unit off at the isolator for at least three minutes, then restore power. A one-time noise event often clears with a cold boot.

  2. Inspect the indoor PCB visually

Open the indoor unit service cover and look for burnt traces, swollen capacitors, or scorched relays. Any visible damage confirms PCB replacement.

  3. Verify supply voltage at the PCB terminal

Measure L-N at the PCB input with a multimeter. Confirm voltage is within the nameplate tolerance and stable under load.

  4. Reseat all PCB harness connectors

Disconnect and reconnect each plug on the indoor PCB, checking for bent pins, corrosion, or backed-out terminals.

  5. Check for noise sources on the circuit

Identify shared circuits with inverter drives, welders, or dimmers. Relocate the feed or fit a line filter if interference is suspected.

  6. Replace the indoor unit PCB

If A1 persists after the above, order the model-specific indoor PCB from Daikin parts and swap it, carrying over DIP switch positions and address settings.

When to call a professional

Call a licensed HVAC technician once the power reset fails and you cannot safely reach the indoor PCB on a high-wall or ceiling cassette unit. PCB replacement requires matching part numbers, transferring address settings, and verifying the transmission bus after swap. Working at height, handling live mains, and confirming ground integrity on a VRV system are tasks for certified personnel, especially on commercial installations with multiple indoor units on one refrigerant circuit.
