What does Rational E12 mean?

E12 on Rational SelfCookingCenter and CombiMaster units signals a cooling-system fault tied to the cavity or electronics cooling fan circuit. The control expects a feedback signal from the fan that cools the electrical compartment; when the fan fails to spin at commanded speed, the oven raises E12 to protect the electronics and control board from thermal damage before continuing to cook.

Symptoms

• Display shows E12 and the oven halts or refuses to start a new cycle.
• Audible fan noise is absent or abnormal behind the control panel.
• Electrical compartment feels unusually hot to the touch.
• Fault returns shortly after power cycling the unit.

Common causes

• Fan blades obstructed by grease, lint, or debris.
• Fan motor bearings seized or windings failed.
• Loose, corroded, or disconnected wiring at the fan harness.
• Control-board output stage for the fan has failed.
• Inadequate clearance around the oven causing thermal cut-back.

Diagnostic steps

   Power down and allow cooling

   Isolate the unit at the breaker and let the cabinet cool before opening any panel. The electrical compartment can hold heat for several minutes after a run.

   Inspect the cooling fan

   Remove the service panel and check the fan for grease buildup, debris, or blade damage. Spin the fan by hand; it should rotate freely with no grinding.

   Clean the fan and intake

   Degrease the blades and housing and clear the air intake louvres. Restricted airflow is the most common trigger and can be fixed without parts.

   Check harness and connections

   Reseat the fan connector and inspect wiring for chafing, burnt pins, or loose terminals. Repair or replace damaged leads before re-energising.

   Test fan voltage

   With the oven powered and commanded to run, meter the drive voltage at the fan connector. If voltage is present but the fan does not spin, replace the motor.

   Verify installation clearances

   Confirm minimum side, rear, and top clearances per the installation manual so the oven can shed heat. Insufficient clearance will retrigger E12 even with a new fan.

When to call a professional

Escalate to a RATIONAL-authorized technician if the fan drive voltage is missing at the connector, if E12 returns after a verified fan replacement, or if you find burnt traces on the control board. Electronics-side diagnosis requires the factory service reference and insulated access around live three-phase wiring, and a misdiagnosed board swap is an expensive dead end that will not clear the underlying overheat condition.
