Connection error between control and operating module
What does Alto-Shaam E96 mean?
E96 indicates a communication failure between the main control unit and the operating (user interface) module. The two boards communicate over a serial data link; when that link is interrupted or one module stops responding, E96 is displayed and the oven halts. This is a board-to-board communication fault rather than a sensor or mechanical failure.
Symptoms
- Oven shuts down and displays E96, often immediately at power-up.
- Control panel may be partially or fully unresponsive.
- Display may show scrambled characters or go blank before E96 appears.
- Error persists across power cycles if wiring or board hardware is at fault.
Common causes
- Loose or disconnected ribbon cable or data harness between control and UI module.
- Corroded or damaged connector pins on the communication harness.
- Failed control board — no longer transmitting on the communication bus.
- Failed UI (operating) module — not responding to queries from the control board.
- Voltage issue on the communication bus supply rail.
Diagnostic steps

Power cycle the oven
Turn the unit off, disconnect from power for 60 seconds, restore power, and observe whether E96 appears again immediately. A transient communication glitch can trigger E96 and clear on a clean boot.

Inspect the communication harness between boards
With power locked out, locate the data cable connecting the main control board to the operating module. Unplug each end, inspect connector pins for corrosion or damage, and re-seat both ends firmly before restoring power.

Check for physical damage to the cable
Examine the full length of the communication harness for pinched, chafed, or melted sections. Route the cable away from heat sources or sharp edges if damage is found, and replace the harness if insulation is compromised.

Verify control board supply voltage
Measure the DC supply voltage feeding the control board at the designated test points. Low or missing supply voltage will prevent the board from initializing and communicating with the UI module.

Isolate the faulty board
If a known-good replacement board is available for either the control or UI module, substitute one at a time. Whichever substitution clears E96 identifies the failed board. Do not attempt board replacement without confirming the exact part number for the oven model.
