What does Navien E003 mean?
E003 signals ignition failure — the control board attempted to light the burner but received no flame confirmation from the flame rod. The unit shuts down as a safety precaution, cutting off hot water production. Gas supply, the igniter electrode, the flame rod, venting, and electrical grounding are the primary systems to evaluate before calling for service.
Symptoms
- No hot water at any fixture in the building.
- E003 displayed on the front panel control screen.
- Unit clicks through ignition sequence but burner does not light.
- Repeated lockout resets without successful ignition.
Common causes
- Main gas supply valve is closed or gas pressure is below specification.
- Flame rod is coated with combustion deposits and cannot sense the flame signal.
- Igniter electrode is cracked, corroded, or has incorrect spark gap.
- Intake or exhaust vent is blocked, starving combustion air.
- Ground wire is loose or disconnected, disrupting flame detection circuit.
- Gas valve assembly is faulty and not releasing adequate fuel.
Diagnostic steps
- 01
Verify gas supply and pressure
Confirm the main gas shutoff valve is fully open and aligned with the pipe. Test other gas appliances in the building to confirm utility supply is active. If pressure is suspect, measure at the unit's test port — consult the installation manual for the model-specific minimum supply pressure.
- 02
Inspect and clean the flame rod
Remove the burner access panel, locate the flame rod, and inspect for carbon fouling or corrosion. Gently clean the probe with fine emery cloth, ensuring the mounting screws are tight to maintain a proper ground path.
- 03
Check igniter electrode and spark gap
Inspect the igniter for cracks in the ceramic insulator and correct electrode gap per the service manual. Replace if cracked or if the electrode tip is worn down.
- 04
Clear intake and exhaust venting
Walk the entire vent run from the unit to the exterior termination. Remove any debris, ice, bird nests, or physical blockages. Confirm all vent pipe joints are secure and leak-free.
- 05
Confirm ground wire connection
Locate the unit's chassis ground wire and verify it is securely fastened to both the unit frame and the electrical panel ground. A poor ground prevents the PCB from reading the ionization signal on the flame rod.
- 06
Reset and perform a test fire
After completing checks, press the Reset button on the front panel. Open a hot water fixture to trigger the call for heat and observe whether the burner lights and holds flame. If ignition fails again, escalate to a licensed technician for gas valve or PCB replacement.

When to call a professional
If the burner still fails to light after confirming gas supply, cleaning the flame rod, and clearing venting, a licensed technician is required. Gas valve replacement, PCB diagnosis, and igniter replacement involve working inside sealed gas-carrying components — tasks that require proper tools, combustion analyzers, and certification to perform safely and legally.
