What does True E1 mean?
The LAE electronic controller on your True TSCI-series scientific refrigerator has detected a fault on the T1 thermostat probe. T1 is the gray return-air NTC thermistor that drives compressor cut-in and cut-out. When the controller cannot read a valid resistance from T1, it displays E1 and loses its temperature reference, leaving the cabinet unable to regulate temperature correctly.
Symptoms
- The LAE display flashes 'E1' continuously with the alarm indicator lit.
- The compressor runs continuously or not at all due to loss of a valid temperature reference.
- Cabinet temperature drifts outside set range, often triggering a secondary hi or Lo alarm.
- Audible alarm beeps repeat at regular intervals until the fault is resolved.
Common causes
- Failed or open-circuit T1 NTC thermistor — resistance reads infinite or near-zero.
- Broken, corroded, or disconnected probe wiring between the T1 sensor and the LAE controller terminals.
- Probe connector dislodged from the controller board due to vibration or improper servicing.
- Moisture or ice ingress at the probe connector causing intermittent open-circuit readings.
- LAE controller input circuit failure preventing it from reading an otherwise good probe.

Diagnostic steps
Disconnect mains power
Pull the plug or trip the breaker — pressing the keypad power-off button does not de-energize all cabinet circuits.
Locate and inspect the T1 probe
The T1 probe (gray wire, current revision) is the return-air thermostat sensor inside the cabinet airstream. Trace the gray wire to the LAE controller terminal block and check for damage, corrosion, or a pulled connector.
Measure T1 probe resistance
Disconnect the probe from the controller before measuring. At 32°F (0°C) the LAE NTC T1 probe should read approximately 27.22 kΩ. Infinite resistance indicates an open-circuit failure; near-zero indicates a short — both require replacement.
Perform ice-bath verification if resistance is borderline
Submerge the probe in a stirred ice-water bath for one minute and re-measure. A reading outside ±10% of 27.22 kΩ at 32°F confirms a degraded probe.
Reseat or replace the probe
If wiring is intact, reseat the connector firmly and restore power to check if E1 clears. If the probe measured out-of-range, replace it with a True OEM T1 NTC thermistor to avoid temperature offset and warranty voidance.
Verify normal operation
Confirm E1 is gone, the compressor cycles normally, and the cabinet reaches set point. Reset the thi temperature log after 24 hours of stable operation.
When to call a professional
Contact a licensed refrigeration technician if E1 persists after installing a new OEM probe — the LAE controller input circuit has likely failed and the board needs replacement. Also call a technician if accessing the probe wiring requires refrigerant-side disassembly, or if the unit contains R290 hydrocarbon refrigerant and any tubing may be disturbed.
