What does Ako E12 mean?
E12 indicates that the SELFDRIVE self-calibration system was unable to complete for the first evaporator due to lack of stability in the refrigeration system. The controller detected excessive oscillations or thermal disturbances — typically from door openings, pressure oscillations, or unstable refrigerant flow — that prevented a stable calibration measurement. The controller continues in standard regulation mode until calibration is successfully reattempted.
Symptoms
- E12 appears on the display after a SELFDRIVE calibration attempt.
- SELFDRIVE calibration has timed out without completing.
- Controller operates in standard regulation mode for the first evaporator.
- Alarm relay activates.
- The controller will attempt recalibration on the next scheduled calibration cycle.
Common causes
- Door openings during the calibration window disrupting thermal stability (most common).
- Expansion valve hunting causing suction pressure oscillations during calibration.
- Heavy product loading during calibration causing rapid temperature swings in the cold room.
- Refrigerant charge imbalance producing unstable evaporator behavior.
- Probe S2 positioned in an airflow zone causing rapid temperature fluctuations.
Diagnostic steps
- 01
Minimize disturbances during SELFDRIVE calibration
Avoid opening the cold room door during calibration. Schedule calibration attempts during overnight or off-peak periods when access frequency is lowest.

Inspect the expansion valve for hunting
Monitor suction pressure on the evaporator circuit for oscillations indicating expansion valve instability. Adjust superheat setting on the expansion valve if hunting is confirmed.

Verify probe S2 position
Confirm S2 is attached to the evaporator coil at a thermally stable point, away from direct fan blast zones that cause rapid temperature swings.

Check refrigerant charge and system balance
Verify refrigerant charge is within specification. An undercharged system produces greater pressure and temperature swings that prevent SELFDRIVE calibration from stabilizing.

Reattempt SELFDRIVE calibration under stable conditions
After addressing the instability cause, restart SELFDRIVE calibration per the AKO manual and monitor that it completes without triggering E12 again.
