What does Amana Menumaster Err5 mean?

Err5 is a display service code on Amana Menumaster commercial microwaves indicating a shorted touch panel. The manual notes the code will appear if the touch panel is pressed for more than 30 seconds, so a stuck, blocked, or genuinely shorted panel produces Err5. The manual gives a step-by-step routine to determine whether the top or side touch panel is the shorted part.

Symptoms

  • Display shows Err5 during operation.
  • A key appears held or stuck on the touch panel.
  • Err5 appears after the touch panel is pressed for more than 30 seconds.
  • Oven will not respond normally to keypad input.

Common causes

  • Shorted touch panel.
  • A button held or physically blocked for more than 30 seconds.
  • Faulty side touch panel connection at display board connector J5.
  • Faulty top touch panel.

Diagnostic steps

  1. 01

    Power down and retest first

Unplug the oven for one minute, reconnect power, and retest. If the unit operates properly afterward, no service call is required.

  2. 02

    Disconnect the side touch panel

Disconnect the oven from the power supply, then disconnect the side touch panel connector from the display board at J5.

  3. 03

    Reconnect power and observe

Reconnect the oven to the power supply and watch the display for 30 seconds to see whether Err5 reappears.

  4. 04

Identify and replace the shorted panel

If Err5 reappears after 30 seconds, replace the top touch panel. If Err5 does not reappear after 30 seconds, replace the side touch panel.

When to call a professional

While the Err5 routine is procedural, it requires disconnecting the oven from power, opening the control area to reach the display board connector J5, and replacing a touch panel. 208/230 VAC is present elsewhere in the control circuit, so the manual treats this as a service-technician task under its eight caution steps. If you are not comfortable working inside a commercial microwave's control assembly, call an authorized Amana Menumaster service agent.
