What does Carel E11 mean?
The E11 alarm on Carel ir33 or pCO controllers indicates that serial probe S11 — a digitally networked sensor communicating over the Carel serial bus — has not sent a valid update within the expected polling interval. The controller marks S11 as not updated, disabling any control or alarm functions that rely on this probe's reading and falling back to a duty-cycle mode set by parameter c4.
Symptoms
- E11 displayed alternating with temperature on the controller screen.
- Any control function using S11 data (e.g., zone temperature regulation) falls back to duty-cycle operation.
- Alarm relay output activates.
- Loss of temperature monitoring for the zone or circuit assigned to S11.
Common causes
- Communication bus wiring (RS-485 or similar) broken, shorted, or disconnected between S11 and the controller.
- Incorrect bus termination resistance causing signal reflection and data loss.
- Serial probe S11 has powered-off or failed.
- Bus address conflict with another device sharing the same node address as S11.
Diagnostic steps
- 01
Inspect the serial bus wiring
Trace the RS-485 data cable connecting S11 back to the controller. Check for broken conductors, loose terminations, or damaged shielding.
- 02
Verify bus termination
Confirm that termination resistors (typically 120 Ω) are installed only at the two physical ends of the RS-485 bus and that the S11 node is correctly connected mid-bus.
- 03
Check S11 probe power supply
Verify the S11 probe is receiving its rated supply voltage (typically 12–24 V dc) at the probe terminals. Zero volts indicates a wiring or supply failure.
- 04
Confirm the S11 bus address
Use the probe's DIP switch or configuration to confirm it is set to the address the controller is polling. Address conflicts cause E11 while the physical probe is operational.
- 05
Power-cycle the bus and reset
Power down the controller and S11 probe, wait 30 seconds, then restore power. Clear the alarm and verify S11 resumes reporting within two polling cycles.

When to call a professional
If bus wiring appears intact and the probe is powered but E11 persists, the serial probe or controller communication port may be faulty. A Carel-authorized technician should perform bus diagnostics with appropriate tooling and replace the defective component. Do not substitute a different probe type or disable the S11 alarm; loss of serial probe data disables zone monitoring that may be critical to product safety.
