What does Carel LO mean?

The LO alarm activates when the temperature measured by probe S1 (the room/cabinet probe) drops below the configured low-temperature alarm threshold for longer than the allowed delay period. On the Carel ir33/SmartCella/UltraCella the alarm is automatic — it self-resets once the temperature rises back above the threshold. It indicates the refrigerated space is running colder than safe operating limits.

Symptoms

  • LO alternates with the current temperature reading on the display.
  • Alarm output activates and buzzer sounds.
  • Cabinet or cold-room temperature is at or below the low-temperature alarm setpoint.
  • Alarm clears automatically once temperature recovers above the threshold.

Common causes

  • Thermostat setpoint is set too low relative to product storage requirements.
  • Low-temperature alarm threshold (AL parameter) is configured too close to the setpoint.
  • Door left open in cold weather allowing excessive cold ambient air into the cabinet.
  • Refrigeration system over-cooling due to a stuck-open expansion valve or control fault.
  • Probe S1 is located in an area with unrepresentative cold spots (e.g., near the evaporator).

Diagnostic steps

  1. Verify actual cabinet temperature

Use a calibrated thermometer to confirm the space temperature is genuinely low, ruling out a probe calibration offset.

  2. Check the setpoint and alarm differential

In the controller's alarm parameters, confirm the low-alarm threshold (AL) is set at least 2–3 °C below the setpoint to avoid nuisance alarms during pull-down.

  3. Inspect the door seals and latches

Check that all door gaskets seal correctly and latches hold the door closed. Gaps allow cold ambient infiltration in winter, driving temperatures down.

  4. Review recent operating history

Determine if the LO alarm occurred after a recent product load, setpoint change, or overnight ambient temperature drop to identify a transient cause.

  5. Silence and reset the alarm

Press the Prg button to reset the alarm. The LO alarm resets automatically once temperature rises above the threshold; no manual reset is needed on auto-reset configurations.

When to call a professional

Call a refrigeration technician if the LO alarm recurs repeatedly and the cabinet temperature is confirmed low by an independent thermometer. Persistent over-cooling points to a refrigeration system fault — such as a stuck expansion valve, a failed hot-gas bypass solenoid, or a control board defect — that requires an F-Gas certified engineer with refrigerant handling certification to diagnose safely.
