Refrigerant insufficient (low-fluorine) protection — compressor and outdoor fan stop, indoor fan keeps running

Source: Gree/Gree_etac-iii-r32-service-manual-a_HVAC.pdf

What does Gree F0 mean?

Gree's F0 is a refrigerant-insufficient (low-fluorine) protection. The unit has detected that the system is short of refrigerant. In cooling or dry mode the compressor and outdoor fan stop while the indoor fan keeps running, and the dual-8 display shows F0.

Symptoms

  • Display shows F0 and the unit stops cooling
  • Compressor and outdoor fan stop while the indoor fan keeps running
  • Poor or no cooling before the code latches
  • Outer case of the compressor runs very hot, sometimes with abnormal noise

Common causes

  • Refrigerant is leaking or the charge is insufficient
  • Outdoor/indoor heat exchanger too dirty, or air inlet/outlet blocked
  • System blocked internally (dirt, ice or oil blockage; service valve not fully open)
  • Compressor not running normally (strange noise or leakage), casing too hot
  • Indoor evaporator temperature sensor loose or working abnormally
  • Main board fault

Diagnostic steps

  1. Clean the heat exchangers

If the heat exchangers are dirty or the air inlet/outlet is blocked, clean them and clear the blockage, then see if the F0 fault clears.

  2. Check the compressor

Confirm the compressor runs normally — listen for strange noise or signs of leakage and check that the casing is not abnormally hot. Make it run normally if it does not.

  3. Check for internal blockage

Look for a blocked system (dirt, ice or oil block, or a service valve that has not been opened fully). Remove any blockage in the system.

  4. Check the refrigerant charge

Inspect the system for leaks; if refrigerant is leaking, repair the leak and recharge to the correct amount per the service manual.

  5. Replace the main board

If the fault persists after the above, replace the main board with one of the same model.

When to call a professional

Diagnosing low charge, finding and repairing leaks, and recharging R32 all require recovery equipment, gauges and a refrigerant-handling licence. R32 is a mildly flammable A2L refrigerant, so opening the sealed circuit must be done by a qualified technician following national gas regulations. If cleaning and clearing blockages does not clear F0, hand the unit to a licensed HVAC pro.
