What does Henny Penny E-4 mean?

E-4 triggers when the control board and microprocessor exceed 180°F (82°C) as detected by an internal temperature circuit on the board itself. Excessive heat inside the fryer's control enclosure degrades electronics over time and can cause erratic behavior, so the unit locks out heating until the board cools and the root cause is addressed.

Symptoms

• Display shows E-4 and heating stops.
• Control enclosure feels hot to the touch.
• Error recurs shortly after power cycling without clearing the root cause.
• Side louvers or vents are visibly blocked with grease or debris.

Common causes

• Side louvers or ventilation openings blocked by grease, dust, or nearby equipment.
• Insufficient clearance behind or beside the fryer restricting airflow.
• Ambient kitchen temperature is excessively high in the equipment area.
• Faulty temperature sensor on the control board reporting false over-temperature.
• Failed cooling fan inside the control enclosure (where fitted).

Diagnostic steps

   Clear vents and louvers

   Inspect both side louvers and all ventilation openings. Remove grease, dust, and debris with a degreaser and a stiff brush before restarting.

   Verify installation clearances

   Confirm at least 1 in. (25 mm) of free space at the rear of the fryer for exhaust airflow. Move adjacent equipment if necessary.

3. 03

   Power cycle and monitor

   Turn the power switch OFF, wait for the enclosure to cool, then turn it back ON. If E-4 does not return and the louvers are clear, the issue is resolved.

   Check actual board temperature

   Use an air thermometer to measure control enclosure temperature. If temperature reads below 180°F (82°C) yet E-4 persists, the onboard temperature sensor is faulty.

   Replace the control board

   If the board temperature sensor is confirmed faulty or the board continues to overheat after all airflow corrections, replace the control board with the Henny Penny-specified part for your model.
