What does Tempstar 7 Flashes mean?
On a Tempstar packaged gas/electric unit, the integrated gas unit controller (IGC) LED flashing seven times indicates a rollout switch fault. The manual states the IGC LED will display fault code 7 when the rollout switch trips. The rollout switch, located above the main burners, closes the main gas valve in the event of flame rollout when its temperature reaches the maximum allowable level.
Symptoms
- IGC LED flashes seven times instead of staying continuously on
- Main gas valve closes and burners stop firing
- Indoor (evaporator) fan and induced-draft motor keep running until the switch is reset
- No gas heat until the rollout switch is manually reset
Common causes
- Flame rollout at the main burners
- Excessive temperature at the rollout switch location
- Blocked or restricted heat exchanger or flue passages
- Combustion problem pushing flame outside the burner area
Diagnostic steps
- 01
Confirm the LED code
Remove the control access panel and verify the IGC LED is flashing seven times; the manual states this is fault code 7, a rollout switch trip.
- 02
Stop using the heat until inspected
Because the rollout switch trips on flame rollout, leave the heating section off until the cause of rollout is found and corrected.
- 03
Inspect for combustion blockage
Check the burners, heat exchanger, and flue for restriction or blockage that could cause flame to roll out from the burner compartment.
- 04
Reset only after correction
The fan and draft motor run until the switch is reset; reset the rollout switch only after a technician has confirmed the rollout cause is resolved.

When to call a professional
Call a qualified service technician immediately for a rollout switch fault. Flame rollout is a safety condition involving combustion and the heat exchanger, and the manual reserves service for a qualified technician with proper tools and test instruments. Do not jumper or bypass the rollout switch or repeatedly reset it; a tripped rollout switch can indicate a serious combustion or heat exchanger problem requiring professional diagnosis.
