Krupps SAL Error Code

Exhausted brine — not enough brine (water and salt) for the resin regeneration of the built-in softener

Source: Krupps/Krupps_ADVANCE_ServiceManual_CommercialKitchen.pdf

What does Krupps SAL mean?

SAL on a Krupps dishwasher means the brine is exhausted: there is not enough brine (water and salt solution) for the resins regeneration of the built-in water softener. The softener can no longer regenerate, so the operator needs to add softener salt. This is a user-serviceable warning rather than a hardware fault.

Symptoms

  • 'SAL' message shown on the display
  • Salt level low in the softener container inside the tank
  • Water softener no longer regenerating
  • Possible increase in limescale / poorer rinse results over time

Common causes

  • Salt used up in the built-in water softener
  • Salt container inside the tank not refilled
  • Brine (water and salt solution) insufficient for resin regeneration

Diagnostic steps

  1. Refill softener salt

User action: refill salt inside the container (with cap) inside the tank. The manual recommends using special softener salt.

  2. Use the correct salt

Use proper water-softener salt as the manual recommends, not table salt, so the resins regenerate correctly.

  3. Allow the warning to clear

After refilling, the warning clears once the brine is replenished; on first fill the salt may take time to dissolve before the message disappears.

  4. Technician: recover the brine if needed

Technician check: recover the brine inside the built-in softener if the SAL message persists after refilling.

When to call a professional

SAL is normally a user task — simply refill softener salt in the capped container inside the tank. Call a technician only if the message persists after correctly refilling with proper softener salt, in which case the manual's technician check is to recover the brine inside the built-in softener. A lingering SAL after a correct refill suggests the softener's regeneration system itself needs service.
