What does Pitco E2 mean?

E2 indicates the fryer's temperature probe (RTD sensor) has been detected as open or shorted. The controller suspends all heating and cooking activity immediately to prevent uncontrolled oil temperature. You will see the error displayed on the control panel and the heating element or gas valve will be de-energized until the fault is cleared.

Symptoms

  • Fryer stops heating and displays E2 on the control panel.
  • Cooking and timer functions are suspended until the fault is resolved.
  • Oil temperature drops steadily because heating is locked out.
  • Control panel may emit an alarm tone alongside the error display.

Common causes

  • Temperature probe wiring has become disconnected from the control board connector.
  • Probe wiring is damaged, pinched, or has a broken conductor causing an open circuit.
  • Probe element itself has failed internally (open or shorted RTD element).
  • Corrosion or grease contamination at the probe connector terminals causing high resistance.
  • Control board input circuit failure preventing probe signal from being read.

Diagnostic steps

  1. Power down and inspect probe wiring

Turn the fryer off and disconnect power. Trace the probe wiring harness from the sensor bulb to the control board connector and check for visible damage, melted insulation, or kinks.

  2. Check probe connector seating

Unplug and firmly reseat the probe connector at the control board. Inspect the terminals for corrosion or grease buildup; clean with electrical contact cleaner if contaminated.

  3. Measure probe resistance

Use a multimeter to measure resistance across the probe leads at room temperature. Consult the Pitco service manual resistance chart for your model — a reading outside the specified range confirms a failed probe.

  4. Replace the temperature probe if defective

If resistance is out of specification, replace the probe with the correct Pitco part number for your fryer model. Reconnect and route wiring away from heat sources.

  5. Restore power and verify operation

Power the fryer on and confirm E2 has cleared and the display shows normal oil temperature. Monitor through a full heat cycle to verify stable probe readings.

When to call a professional

Call a licensed Pitco service technician if replacing the probe does not clear the E2 fault, if wiring continuity tests pass but the error persists (indicating a control board input failure), or if you are not equipped to safely perform resistance measurements on energized commercial kitchen equipment. Board-level diagnosis and replacement require factory-trained service.
