Smeg E04
Timeout — error during cooldown
Source: SMEG 2/instruction-manual_ALFA4-515EHVLFT_19290337201-EN.pdf
What does Smeg E04 mean?
Smeg shows E04 as a timeout fault. The display title reads "TIMEOUT" with the description "ERROR DURING COOLDOWN". The oven did not complete its cooldown phase within the expected time, so the control system flags a timeout. The manual notes some faults prevent operation while others still allow use, and you should always contact Technical Assistance.
Symptoms
- Display shows E04 with the title "TIMEOUT"
- On-screen description references an error during cooldown
- Cooldown phase does not complete as expected
- Oven may flag the fault at the end of a cycle
Common causes
- Cooldown phase did not complete within the expected time
- Cooling not progressing as the controller expects
- Sensor or control reading preventing cooldown completion
Diagnostic steps
- 01
Let the oven cool fully
Allow the appliance to finish cooling and observe whether the timeout clears once the chamber has cooled down.
- 02
Power-cycle the oven
Switch the oven off at the main power switch and back on to clear a transient timeout reading.
- 03
Avoid blocking airflow
Keep the appliance area clear so the cooldown phase is not impeded, then retry a cycle.
- 04
Contact the Technical Assistance Service
If E04 persists after cooling and a power cycle, contact Smeg Technical Assistance as the manual directs for error messages.

When to call a professional
The manual states you should always contact the Technical Assistance Service for displayed error messages. A repeating cooldown timeout points to a sensing or cooling-system issue inside the appliance, so call a qualified Smeg technician for diagnosis rather than opening the oven yourself, since servicing involves mains-voltage and heating components.
