What does Bell and Gossett E14 mean?

E14 is a low pressure error on the e-90E Smart Pump, triggered when the system pressure falls below the minimum threshold set in parameter P45 for longer than the delay time set in P46. The pump shuts down to protect the system from operating in an under-pressure condition. By default, the pump attempts automatic restart (P47 = ON). E14 does not activate in ACT mode.

Symptoms

  • Pump stops and displays E14 on the control panel.
  • STATUS LED illuminates red steady.
  • System pressure reading is below the P45 minimum threshold value.
  • Pump may cycle on and off repeatedly if P47 is enabled and the pressure condition is not corrected.

Common causes

  • P45 minimum pressure threshold set too high relative to actual system operating pressure.
  • System leak causing pressure to drop below threshold.
  • Supply water insufficient to maintain minimum pressure — tank or supply depleted.
  • Pressure sensor reading incorrectly low due to calibration offset or sensor fault.
  • Non-return valve failure allowing backflow and pressure collapse.

Diagnostic steps

  1. Check actual system pressure

Install a calibrated test gauge at the pump discharge and compare the reading against the P45 threshold setting. Confirm whether actual pressure is genuinely low or whether the sensor is misreading.

  2. Review and adjust P45 and P46 settings

Access parameter P45 (Pressure Minimum Threshold) and confirm it is appropriate for the application. If the system legitimately operates below P45, lower the threshold. Also verify P46 (delay time) is not set too short, causing nuisance trips.

  3. Inspect for system leaks

Walk the system pipework and check all joints, valves, and fittings for visible leaks. A significant leak will prevent the pump from maintaining minimum pressure regardless of speed.

  4. Verify sensor calibration

Perform a zero-pressure auto-calibration using parameter P44 with the system depressurized. An offset sensor can cause false low-pressure readings. Replace the sensor if calibration does not resolve the discrepancy.

  5. Check non-return valves

Inspect non-return (check) valves for proper seating. A stuck-open check valve allows backflow, causing pressure to collapse when the pump slows, triggering E14.

When to call a professional

Call a licensed plumber or mechanical technician if E14 persists after adjusting P45 and P46, and no leaks or sensor issues are found. Persistent low-pressure faults require hydraulic system analysis — including supply assessment, pipe sizing review, and check valve inspection — that is beyond pump parameter adjustment.
