Magnetron Over Temperature

What does TurboChef F5 mean?
F5 is displayed if either magnetron thermostat reaches 270 degrees F (138 degrees C), or if either thermostat connector is disconnected. The magnetron thermostats are self-resetting and are wired in series; if one opens the control switches off both magnetrons until the open thermostat closes. The fault clears at the onset of a cook cycle once the thermostat is closed and properly connected.
Symptoms
- Display shows "F5: Magnetron Over Temperature"
- Both magnetrons switch off until the thermostat closes
- Cook cycle terminates upon discovery of the fault
- Oven may feel hot at the side or rear cooling panels
Common causes
- Blockage of cool air into the oven side or rear panels
- Rear cooling fan exhaust guard(s) clogged
- Magnetron thermostat connector disconnected
- Magnetron thermostat reaching its 270 degrees F trip point
- Inadequate magnetron cooling-fan operation
Diagnostic steps
- 01
Clear obstructions to cooling air
Remove anything obstructing the flow of cool air into the side and rear oven panels so the magnetrons can cool.

Clean the rear fan exhaust guards
Make sure the rear cooling fans and their exhaust guards are free of debris so airflow is not restricted.

Allow the thermostats to self-reset
The thermostats reset automatically once they cool; the F5 message clears at the onset of a cook cycle when the thermostat is closed.

Check the thermostat connectors
Verify both magnetron thermostat connectors are seated, since a disconnected connector also triggers F5; the thermostats are wired in series.

Discharge before any internal microwave work
If internal inspection is needed, disconnect AC power and discharge the high-voltage capacitors before going near the magnetron assembly.

When to call a professional
Basic F5 fixes (clearing airflow blockages and cleaning rear fan guards) are operator-safe, but any work near the magnetron thermostats or connectors is inside the high-voltage microwave system. The manual warns the magnetron must never be measured by any method other than a discharged filament resistance test.
