What does Traulsen High Temperature Alarm mean?
The Intela-Traul controller has detected the cabinet temperature above its high-temperature limit and signals a high-temperature alarm with the alarm LED and horn. It warns that the box is running warmer than the setpoint, which puts stored product at risk. The condition can be transient (a door left open, a warm load) or point to a refrigeration or sensor fault.
Symptoms
- Alarm LED illuminated and horn sounding on the control
- Cabinet warmer than the programmed setpoint
- Possible food product warming or thawing
- Evaporator coil may be frozen up
Common causes
- Door(s) left open longer than five minutes
- Excessive amount of hot product placed in the unit
- Evaporator coil frozen up
- Low refrigerant charge
- Sensor probe not properly connected, or a failed sensor
Diagnostic steps
- 01
Check the doors
Confirm no door has been open longer than five minutes; close any open doors.
- 02
Reduce hot product load
If an excessive amount of hot product was just loaded, reduce the volume and allow the cabinet to recover.
- 03
Inspect the evaporator coil
Check whether the evaporator coil is frozen up; if so, defrost the coil per the iced-coil procedure.
- 04
Check refrigerant charge
Check the compressor for low refrigerant and add refrigerant if it is not OK.
- 05
Verify sensor connections
Confirm the sensor probe(s) are properly connected; reconnect if needed and replace any failed sensor.

When to call a professional
Call a refrigeration technician if the alarm persists after ruling out open doors and hot loads, or if the steps point to low refrigerant, a frozen coil, or a failed sensor. Adding refrigerant, recovering a sealed system, and replacing controller sensors require EPA certification and proper tools, and incorrect repairs can damage the compressor or void the warranty.
