What does Traulsen Low Temperature Alarm mean?
The Intela-Traul controller signals a low-temperature alarm when the cabinet runs colder than its low-temperature limit. It indicates the box is overcooling relative to the setpoint, which can over-freeze product. On hot food units note that the cabinet holds hot food at temperature and is not designed to heat cold product, so a cold reading is normal for empty hot-food cabinets.
Symptoms
- Alarm LED illuminated and horn sounding on the control
- Cabinet colder than the programmed setpoint
- Product over-chilled or frozen unexpectedly
- Compressor running continuously
Common causes
- Temperature setting for the unit is too low
- No food product in the unit
- Failed compressor relay
- Sensor probe not properly connected, or a failed sensor
Diagnostic steps
- 01
Check the setpoint
If the temperature setting is too low, increase the operating temperature to the correct value.
- 02
Add product
If the unit is empty, add product to the unit so the load matches the control's expectation.
- 03
Check the compressor relay
Check for a failed compressor relay; if not OK, replace the failed controller or slave relay.
- 04
Verify sensor connections
Confirm the sensor probe(s) are properly connected and reconnect if needed.
- 05
Replace a failed sensor
If the probe checks out as connected but readings are wrong, replace the failed sensor.

When to call a professional
Call a technician if the alarm continues after correcting the setpoint and load, especially when a failed compressor relay or controller is suspected. Replacing the controller, slave relay, or sensors involves disconnecting line-voltage connections and verifying components with a meter; this is service-technician work, and mis-wiring the control can damage the unit.
