What does Traulsen Power Loss Alarm mean?
The power loss alarm tells the operator that the unit lost power. On Smart Control models the power-failure record stores the time of failure, the time power was restored, and the cabinet temperature at restart, removing guesswork about food safety. The alarm can reflect an unplugged unit, a utility outage, low incoming voltage, or a failed controller transformer.
Symptoms
- Alarm LED illuminated and horn sounding on the control
- Control display blank or recently restarted
- Stored power-failure time and restart-temperature data on Smart Control
- Cabinet temperature elevated after the outage
Common causes
- Unit not plugged in
- Loss of power due to bad weather or a utility outage
- Low incoming voltage to the unit
- Failed controller transformer
Diagnostic steps
- 01
Confirm the unit is plugged in
Check that the unit is plugged in; plug it in if it is not.
- 02
Check for a utility outage
Determine whether power was lost due to bad weather or an outage; full operation returns when service is restored.
- 03
Verify incoming voltage
Confirm the unit is receiving correct voltage; if input is low, contact the local utility provider.
- 04
Check the controller transformer
Check for a failed controller transformer per the manual procedure and replace it if it is not OK.
- 05
Review power-failure data
On Smart Control units, read the stored failure time and restart temperature to judge product safety.

When to call a professional
Call a technician if the unit is plugged into a live, correct-voltage outlet but the alarm persists, which indicates a failed controller transformer. Verifying transformer output (10.2 to 13.8 volts on the listed versions) and replacing the transformer or controller require a meter and electrical service skills. Also have stored food evaluated for safety after any extended outage.
